Wreckage - Self In All Review

Wreckage - Self In All Review

Return to Music Reviews 2024

Wreckage is a hardcore band out of Connecticut that does a good job of paying homage to the genre they play by replicating that 90s hardcore sound with modern production. Unfortunately, the nostalgia feeling you get on this record is all that is really presented here because the band itself doesn’t seem to offer anything new to the genre or put their own spin on it. The EP feels formulaic for most of the EP with fast punk like drums, ripping guitar riffs, deep youth crew-style bass playing, and crisp vocals. Besides a few interesting riffs and groovy bass, nothing on here really stands out as new or hasn’t been done before. Like on the opening of “What’s Left,” it feels like that combo of drums and riffs has been down 100 times over and just feels okay. Also on “screaming out,” you get similar punk drums that sound good but just played out a bit. It feels like the band lacks a sense of urgency in their music. It feels like they are making music for the fun of it (which is always okay), but the songs leave you wanting more in a bad way. Like the closer for “screaming out,” the band gives the episode a last moment to do something big and fun, and it kind of just goes out on a whimper with how lackluster the ending is. I will say the vocalist has definitely refined the vocals to sound cleaner and leaner than their previous release. Now the band might not be so creative on this episode, but I have to give it to them that they all sound really good. The production on this episode is crisp and clear to hear. The bass sounds so good and can easily be heard among the other instruments. The producer for this episode did a great job of giving all the members of the band the right amount of power to their respected instruments. If you are craving a nice trip down nostalgia, then Wreckage is going to give you that, but if you are looking for the next thing to push things forward in hardcore, this might not be the band for you.
