Black Tusk may be looking forward to this new LP, but I'm not sure if it's the right direction. This is my first introduction to the sludge metal juggernauts named Black Tusk, and I'm confused on whether they are great at their style of music or just skating on by. The sludge hard rock vibes at times sounded really great, or they sounded amateur at best. The riffs could sound hard and tough, then sound very lackluster or uninspiring. I'm not sure if that's a part of the sludge metal vibes or not. Half of the vocals sounded like they matched well with most of the songs. The huskier and lower-sounding lyrics seem to match more than the cleaner-screamed vocals. It felt like they were singing for two different bands. I will say the drum and bass section of the band was consistently interesting. The drums were able to keep a dynamic and interesting style of playing that was fun to listen to. Then you had the huge bass that just made everything sound heavy and thick as fuck. He is playing that bass hard and not wasting any of that energy. Maybe I'm unfamiliar with this band and need more time to understand them, because this album was not anything too amazing but also not horrible. Just kind of there, not going forward or backwards. Just chilling in neutral.
