With a name like Big Cheese, you’d expect something over-the-top or maybe even a bit gimmicky—but that’s not the case here. Instead, this band delivers a raw, no-nonsense throwback to 80s and 90s hardcore punk, packed with thrashing energy, sharp riffs, and pounding drums.

Big Cheese doesn’t just recreate old-school hardcore; they add their own spin to it, incorporating intricate guitar work and dynamic drumming that keep things feeling fresh. Their influences are clear—classic NYHC aggression meets UK punk grit—but they execute it with genuine passion and intensity rather than just imitation.

Now, let’s talk about the mix—because it’s a mess. It honestly feels like they intentionally went for a lo-fi, gritty sound, capturing the rough, unpolished aesthetic of early hardcore records. And while that rawness adds to the charm, it also means a lot of the vocals get lost in the chaos. For most of the album, it’s like the vocals are buried under layers of distortion, only to suddenly snap into focus on the final track—like someone finally realized, “Oh wait, people might actually want to hear the singer.”

Despite the rough mix, the album remains undeniably catchy. That lo-fi production actually enhances the urgency of the music, making every riff and drum fill feel even more explosive. If you’re into hardcore that embraces its imperfections and thrives on raw energy, then Big Cheese delivers exactly that.

Final thoughts? The production might not be for everyone, but Big Cheese still manages to stand out in the modern hardcore scene by bringing familiar influences with just enough of their own flavor. Whether you’re here for the throwback vibes, the punchy riffs, or just the pure, unfiltered aggression, this album has plenty to offer.
