Agriculture - Agriculture Review

Agriculture’s latest album feels like it could use a bit of fresh planting. A lot of the ideas here feel stale and overly familiar, leaving the impression that they’re not pushing the envelope as much as they should. Black metal, by nature, is a difficult genre to innovate in because of how raw and minimalist its elements often are. Unfortunately, it seems like Agriculture has fallen into the trap of recycling the same tired sounds and tropes that have been done countless times before.

The album is full of rapid, high-pitched guitar riffs, drowned-out blast beats, and shrieking vocals. While these elements may be shocking or intense for a casual listener, they don’t offer anything new to those who have already heard the staples of black metal. It’s easy to zone out at times, as the album often drifts into a predictable pattern that lacks originality. At certain points, I found myself drifting off, especially during the more typical black metal sections. It’s a shame because you can hear the potential, but it feels like they’re stuck in the past.

That being said, the album isn’t a complete wash. There are some redeeming moments that shine through, particularly when the band throws in unexpected changes. Abrupt shifts in style—like moving from a black metal riff to something groovier or heavier—do a good job of keeping things interesting. These transitions add some much-needed variety and manage to maintain a sense of black metal’s raw energy, even when the sound changes. While these moments are definitely highlights, they aren’t frequent enough to make the entire album stand out as fresh or exciting.

One thing I will give the band credit for is the pacing. The tracks have a solid flow, and just when you think a song is getting too repetitive or boring, the mood shifts enough to keep you engaged. Overall, while there are some cool moments here and there, the album doesn’t quite do enough to revitalize the black metal genre or make a lasting impact.
