The return of Dethklok will either have you celebrating with your face being melted off or mourning with your face melting off—but rest assured, one way or another, your face is definitely going to melt. As the legendary melodic death metal band prepares to release their final album, there’s a distinct lack of closure or sense of finality. Instead, it feels more like a collection of B-sides and tracks left on the cutting room floor. When compared to their previous album, this release lacks the grandeur and epic scope that made its predecessor stand out. The songs here come across as hollow, with many feeling like missed opportunities, or at best, just “okay.”
None of the tracks truly grip you, making it hard to shake the feeling that this isn't a Dethklok record as we’ve come to expect. It almost feels like someone trying to recreate Dethklok songs from memory. This becomes especially apparent in the latter half of the album, where many songs fall flat, feeling uninspired and lacking the usual ferocity and depth.
That said, the album does start strong. The opening tracks feature some solid riffs, bold drumming, a punchy bass line, and the band's signature blend of dark humor and fun lyrics. But unfortunately, there’s a major flaw in the mix: the vocals are often buried too low, sometimes almost to the point of being inaudible. It’s as if the energy and clarity that usually characterize their sound are lost in the chaos.
Ultimately, this new album feels more like a disappointment than a triumphant addition to Dethklok's already impressive catalog. Instead of elevating the band's legacy, it feels more like a step backward. The excitement surrounding the band’s return is quickly tempered by the sense that Dethklok has missed the mark with this final chapter. Dethklok forever, but this release won’t leave the mark that their fans were hoping for.
