Maloevolence’s latest album is more of a malicious fumble than a triumphant return. While the British crossover band is known for its hard-hitting, heavy sound, this new release feels like a rough and often awkward journey. The album kicks off with an intriguing yet disjointed opening that promises something exciting, but unfortunately, this initial spark quickly fizzles out as the album progresses. While there are some solid moments, it’s clear that there are a lot of inconsistencies that detract from the overall experience.

The primary issue with the album lies in the odd and sometimes jarring musical choices scattered throughout. There are several transitions that feel forced or out of place, leaving the listener unsure of what direction the band is heading in. Vocal performances, too, can be a bit hit-or-miss—at times powerful and dynamic, but often sounding off or awkward, especially when the band attempts to switch between harsh and clean vocals. The clean vocals, aside from the standout track "Higher Place," often feel out of place, at times coming across as overly cheesy or lacking the intensity needed to match the rest of the music.

Another problem is the repetitiveness of some of the songs. While the riffs are undeniably heavy and tight, there are moments where the tracks begin to blend together, sounding generic or uninspired. This lack of variety adds to the feeling that the album doesn’t quite reach its full potential. However, there are still some redeeming qualities here. The guitar work is undeniably impressive—the riffs are chuggy and the solos are tight, showcasing the skill of the band’s guitarists. The rhythm section, too, deserves praise; the drumming is sharp and precise, with a heavy use of cymbals that adds flair and keeps the listener engaged.

In terms of production, the album is mostly well-mixed, with a clear emphasis on the guitars and drums, though the vocals sometimes feel buried in the mix. The tightness of the rhythm section and the quality of the riffs give the album a sense of energy and urgency that can be exciting, but the lack of cohesion and occasional awkwardness keep it from reaching the level of their best work.

Ultimately, Malicious Intent is an album that will get fans hyped up in certain moments, but it’s weighed down by its unevenness. It’s a record that has the potential to be great but is marred by too many missteps and missed opportunities. While there’s no denying that Maloevolence can still bring the heat, this release shows that they have some work to do before hitting their stride again.
