Eighteen April - Visions Review

Return to Music Reviews 2025

Eighteen April brings a raw, intense blend of metalcore and deathcore with their latest album, Visions, blending complex riffs, heavy breakdowns, and dynamic vocals into an album that strikes with aggression and atmosphere. While thereโ€™s no shortage of power and intensity, there are moments where the band's attempts at innovation feel a bit uneven, with some tracks offering captivating energy and others leaving a bit more to be desired.

The album opens with "Maniac", which wastes no time setting a haunting tone. It begins with a slow buildup, featuring static and an emergency broadcast-like sample, before transitioning into a trap-inspired beat that primes listeners for whatโ€™s to come. Tight, eerie drum rolls build out the space, while hollow, spaced-out riffs create an unsettling atmosphere. Once the track fully kicks in, it delivers a punchy combination of groovy metalcore and djent-like riffs. Though the track doesnโ€™t offer anything groundbreaking, itโ€™s solid enough to be mesmerizing, with a well-paced structure that sets the tone for the album.

"Cold Plains" immediately follows with an intense, full-throttle approach. From the start, the drums are fast and hard-hitting, accompanied by crisp, clear vocals and technical guitar work. The track stands out thanks to the mix of punk-like rhythms with black metal-inspired blast beats. The gang vocals are powerful but could benefit from a bit more volume to bring them to the forefront. While the breakdown is hefty and impactful, it doesnโ€™t introduce anything particularly new, but it does provide a solid sonic experience. The production quality is exceptional, ensuring the pacing and transitions flow seamlessly.

"Revelation" starts with a brief industrial intro, quickly shifting into a classic djent groove thatโ€™s familiar but engaging. The riffs are bouncy and remind one of Emmure or Josh Travis-esque playing, and while the clean vocals are solid, they could have been mixed more prominently in the track. The drumming is tight and percussive, but the bass lacks the power to compete with the other sonic elements, making it feel somewhat underutilized in comparison.

On "Tusk" featuring Yul of End These Days, the bass finally steps forward, adding a more gritty texture to the track. The song starts with impressive double kicks, and the vocalsโ€”both from Yul and the main vocalistโ€”are locked in perfectly. However, Yulโ€™s performance could be more audible in the mix. The song is groovy and tight, with a simple but effective chorus that has enough weight to make it memorable.

"Idealist" opens with a fast-paced, intense blast of energy, delivering standard drums and decent riffing that incorporates a creepy, groovy feel. The breakdown, in particular, shines, with rhythm guitars that create a hypnotic backdrop for the aggressive vocal delivery. The addition of pig squeals during the breakdown gives it a sickeningly heavy twist, and the depth of the low vocal range on display here is impressive.

"Cave" feels a little more standard, featuring groovy and bouncy riffs but lacks the punch of earlier tracks. The drums are tight, with strong double kicks, but the clean vocals get lost in the mix, coming across as too quiet compared to the intensity of the instrumental section. Thereโ€™s a bit of a messy feeling as the transitions between clean and unclean vocals donโ€™t blend as seamlessly as in other tracks. While not a bad song, it's the first on the album that feels slightly less refined.

"[Empty]" is a standout, presenting a more restrained approach compared to the high-intensity tracks before it. The vocals take on a darker, more black metal-influenced tone, and the drums incorporate a symphonic-like presence with their haunting quality. The bass is stronger, and the song as a whole feels more thought-out and cohesive. The riffs, however, take on a more progressive djent style, showcasing the bandโ€™s experimental side. Unfortunately, a trap-like slow section midway through the song feels out of place, with awkward clean vocals that donโ€™t quite mesh with the beat. Itโ€™s an unusual detour that doesnโ€™t fully land, though the song picks up again once the heavier elements kick in.

"Invasion" offers an odd interlude with a trap-like electric beat, creating an alien, spacey atmosphere. However, it feels completely out of place with the rest of the album. As a short interlude, it doesnโ€™t seem to serve a clear purpose and might have been better left out altogether.

"Broodlord (Redux)" takes the album back to its roots, offering a full-on death metal assault with blast beats, guttural vocals, and brutal guitar riffs. The drums are absolutely fierce here, and the bass delivers a crushing, weighty presence. Pig squeals and guttural growls round out the track, making for an all-out sonic assault that stands as one of the albumโ€™s heaviest moments.

"Kamui (Redux)" is another track that opens with slow, sludgy riffs, creating an eerie atmosphere with only drums and low spoken words. The track builds a haunting vibe, but the clean vocals, unfortunately, arenโ€™t mixed well and get buried in the layers of instrumentation. The breakdown is massive but doesnโ€™t bring anything new or exciting to the table, leaving the track feeling somewhat one-dimensional despite its potential.

"Polaris (Redux)" is another aggressive offering with fast, black metal-like drums, but the mix on this track feels a little off. The drums, though intense, are often drowned out by the crushing riffs. The track has solid backing vocals and a great metalcore bounce to the riffs, but once again, the clean vocals could have been turned up or re-mixed for better clarity. The energy of the track is undeniable, but itโ€™s marred by some mixing inconsistencies.

Overall, Visions showcases Eighteen Aprilโ€™s intense mix of metalcore and deathcore with some flashes of experimentation, but it also reveals some inconsistencies in terms of song structure, vocal mixing, and overall flow. The album has moments of brilliance, with some truly crushing breakdowns and standout performances from the bandโ€™s members, but also falters in spots where transitions donโ€™t work as intended. Fans of extreme metal will find plenty to appreciate, but at times the album struggles to find its balance between aggression and melody.

While Eighteen April shows potential for future growth and exploration, Visions ultimately feels like a collection of powerful moments interspersed with some questionable choices that detract from its overall impact.
