Dying Fetus, the iconic juggernauts of death metal, have always been known for their relentless intensity and technical prowess. However, their newest album left me with a bit of a mixed feeling. From the opening moments, it felt like something was missing, like the band was holding back or struggling to find their footing. The first half of the album, in particular, had a certain "off" quality to it. Was an instrument buried too deep in the mix? Was there a lapse in the production? Or was it simply the absence of that signature Dying Fetus passion?

For the first five tracks, it felt like the spark that makes their music so electrifying was missing. The drums were sharp, the guitars precise, and the vocals brutal as ever, but there was a noticeable void—something intangible that made these songs feel lifeless. It was as if they were going through the motions, delivering technical death metal without that ferocious hunger that fans have come to expect.

Then, something shifted. With the track "When the Trend Ends," the band seemed to awaken from their creative slumber. The passion returned, and it felt like the band had found their fire again. Suddenly, the songs had that raw intensity that had been lacking earlier. The guitars were no longer just technical exercises—they were fun. The riffs had a sense of groove and flair, with the musicians clearly enjoying themselves more. The bass, too, started to stand out, adding a rich depth that was sorely missed in the early tracks.

Most importantly, the production seemed to improve as well. It was as though the songs had been given more space to breathe, with each element standing out in a more dynamic way. The latter half of the album showcased the band at their best: fast, tight, and heavy, with all the elements of death metal—technical guitar work, brutal drumming, and guttural vocals—blending together seamlessly. The sense of hunger, of desire to crush everything in their path, was unmistakable.

By the end of the album, it was clear that Dying Fetus had re-found their groove. The first half may have felt like a stuttering start, but the second half proved that these guys still have it. They’re still hungry, still capable of delivering brutal, technical death metal that demands attention. It’s not a perfect album, but it’s one that proves when Dying Fetus hits their stride, they’re an unstoppable force.
