Charli XCX - brat Review

Though titled Brat, this album feels more like an absolute beast. Charli has crafted something truly special here, creating an infectious collection of songs that effortlessly blur the lines between the old and the new. With Brat, Charli has not only captured the spirit of the 90s and 2000s techno/trance scene but has seamlessly fused it with modern pop sensibilities, creating an album that’s both nostalgic and contemporary. The result is an exhilarating ride through a musical landscape that’s both familiar and refreshingly new.

What stands out the most about this album is its ability to make you want to dance—not just for a moment, but all night long. Charli has a gift for creating beats that are impossible to ignore. Every track is meticulously crafted, with nothing feeling overproduced or overwhelming, yet nothing is underwhelming either. The beats are powerful and captivating, but they leave space for Charli’s vocals to shine. In tracks like “360” and “Sympathy is a Knife,” she blends hard-hitting rhythms with her mesmerizing vocals, creating a musical experience that grabs hold of you and refuses to let go. These tracks are built for the dance floor, making you want to move with every beat, and you’ll find yourself caught up in the groove before you know it.

Charli’s vocal performance on this album is one of her strongest assets. Her range is impressive, effortlessly shifting between soft, almost spoken-word singing to high-flying, auto-tuned vocals. There’s a rawness and vulnerability in the way she delivers her words, but there’s also a playful confidence that comes through. You can feel the effort she’s put into every note, and it’s clear that she had fun creating this album. Her vocal delivery is a masterclass in emotional expression, capturing both the introspective and infectious elements of her music in a way that feels organic and powerful.

Despite its overall strength, Brat isn’t without its flaws. There’s one track on the album that stands out as a misstep. Unfortunately, it suffers from odd production choices and repetitive vocal lines that hold it back from the rest of the album's high standards. While it’s a minor blip in an otherwise stellar tracklist, it does momentarily interrupt the flow of the album.

However, the pacing of the album is another aspect that truly works in its favor. The songs are short, punchy, and easy to digest, making it the kind of album you’ll want to revisit again and again. Each track is designed to grab your attention quickly, and before you know it, you’re listening to it on repeat. The short runtimes make it feel like you’re constantly moving forward, never lingering too long on one song, keeping the energy up and the listener engaged. By the time you’re at the end of the album, you’ll find yourself hooked on tracks you didn’t expect to love as much as you do.

Brat is an album that delivers far more than you’d expect. Whether you’re a fan of electronic music, pop, or anything in between, Charli’s ability to create songs that span genres makes this album an easy recommendation. Even those who think they know what to expect from her will find themselves surprised, discovering new favorite tracks along the way. There’s a track for everyone on here, and before you know it, you’ll be dancing through the night to Charli’s infectious beats and captivating vocals.
