For a band pushing death punk disco, I’ll admit—I had no clue what that even meant for the longest time. But after catching 18 Fevers live multiple times and diving into this EP, I finally get it. They’ve created something that blends the raw energy of punk with the infectious groove of disco, all while injecting a chaotic dose of mayhem into pop sensibilities. It’s a wild fusion that shouldn’t work—but somehow, it absolutely does.

At the forefront of this madness is lead vocalist Christmas (yeah, that’s actually her name). Her vocals are a spectacle on their own—jumping from squeaky, high-pitched melodies to death-defying, throat-shredding screams of defiance. It’s like a controlled explosion of sound, unpredictable yet perfectly in sync with the band’s reckless energy.

And the band? These fools are not playing around. Chunky bass solos that punch through the mix, catchy and razor-sharp guitar riffs, and dynamic, hyperactive drumming—they bring an insane level of tightness to their chaos. The musicianship is polished, but it never loses that off-the-rails punk feel. Every track is brimming with hooks, adrenaline, and sheer attitude, ensuring that even the most jaded listener will stop and take notice.

That being said, their energy can get the best of them. At times, they turn themselves way up—so much so that the mixing can get cluttered and overwhelmingly loud. It’s as if every instrument is fighting for dominance in an all-out brawl. But honestly? In a genre like this, that’s not really a bad thing. It adds to the raw, unfiltered nature of their sound, making it feel even more alive.

Pulling off a sound like death punk disco takes some serious talent, and 18 Fevers prove they have what it takes. This EP is a chaotic, head-spinning joyride, and if they can refine their balance just slightly, they might just carve out a whole new lane for themselves in the punk world.

데스 펑크 디스코(Death Punk Disco)라는 장르를 밀어붙이는 밴드라니… 솔직히 말해서 처음엔 그게 뭔 뜻인지 전혀 감이 안 왔다. 하지만 18 Fevers의 라이브를 여러 번 보고 이 EP를 들은 후, 이제야 확실히 이해하게 됐다. 이들은 펑크의 거친 에너지를 디스코의 중독성 있는 그루브와 결합하고, 여기에 팝 음악의 혼돈을 더해 전혀 새로운 사운드를 만들어냈다. 이 조합이 성공할 리가 없어 보이는데, 놀랍게도 완벽하게 먹힌다.

이 혼돈의 중심에는 리드 보컬리스트 크리스마스(Christmas)(네, 진짜 이름이다)가 있다. 그녀의 보컬은 그 자체로 하나의 스펙터클이다. 귀여운 듯 높고 날카로운 멜로디에서부터, 목이 찢어질 듯한 폭발적인 샤우팅까지 자유자재로 넘나든다. 마치 통제된 폭발처럼 예측 불가능하지만, 그 혼돈 속에서도 완벽하게 밴드와 조화를 이룬다.

그리고 밴드 사운드? 이 친구들은 장난이 아니다. 묵직한 베이스 솔로, 귀에 착 감기는 강렬한 기타 리프, 그리고 역동적이고 과격한 드러밍—이들은 말 그대로 날 것 그대로의 에너지를 보여주면서도 연주력 하나는 확실히 탄탄하다. 모든 곡이 훅, 아드레날린, 그리고 순수한 반항 정신으로 가득 차 있어, 아무리 까다로운 리스너라도 무조건 집중하게 될 수밖에 없다.

다만, 가끔은 너무 열정적이라 과유불급이 되는 순간도 있다. 사운드를 너무 극한으로 몰아붙이는 바람에 믹싱이 산만하고 너무 시끄럽게 들릴 때가 있다. 모든 악기가 서로를 제치고 앞으로 나가려는 듯한 전쟁을 벌이는 느낌. 하지만 솔직히 말해 이런 장르에서는 오히려 그게 장점이 될 수도 있다. 그 덕분에 음악이 더욱 날것 같고 생생한 에너지를 유지하고 있기 때문이다.

데스 펑크 디스코 같은 독특한 사운드를 완성하려면 확실한 실력이 필요하다. 18 Fevers는 자신들이 그걸 해낼 수 있다는 걸 증명해냈다. 이 EP는 혼돈과 광기로 가득한 롤러코스터 같은 작품이며, 앞으로 이들이 조금만 더 균형을 잡는다면, 펑크 씬에서 완전히 새로운 길을 개척할지도 모른다.
