The 90s grunge alternative rock train is still going strong, and Shout Out from New Jersey is here to show you how strong it is. This band is able to infuse the cool riffs of Nickelback and Three Days Grace with some youthful grit and charm to create some raw and emotional rock gems. The vocals are one of the most defining things about this band. The vocalist is able to showcase a range of feeling through his clear and well-spoken intuition, like on “What I Think I Follow,” and more raw screams, like on “Silver Savior." The backing vocals from the band help give the songs some extra catchiness as well. The bass playing on this EP is thick and vibrant and has such a great string feel and tuning to them like on “jean dean” and “erase me." They do a good job of invoking some 90s alt rock vibes with that bass playing but with a modern take on it. The drumming for most of the EP is quite simple and pulled back, like on "what I think I follow” and “jean dean." The china splashing was one of the highlights to "burn." However, by the time we get to “erase me” and “silver savior,” the drums are more lively and are more dynamically played. The guitar riffs are not bad on this album. They play well to that rock style and do a good job of staying in tune and rocking hard. They are just played well, so they don’t stick out as much. Like on “Burn,” it's the most mild/ bland song on the EP but is still quite good, just not as interesting as the other songs. The band has some catchy songs and some good production to make that catchiness stick out even more. The mixing and layering on this EP is tight and well managed. Nothing sounds overproduced, underutilized, or poorly recorded. If you are looking for new music to listen to while you are driving at night and need to escape for a bit, Shutter has you covered.
