Kitty Moon's debut EP, Koreander Smash, is a four-track introduction to an alternative-rock sound that draws heavily from the '90s and 2000s while blending grunge, post-punk, industrial rock, emo, and alternative metal. Rather than settling into the dreamy, washed-out sound often associated with modern shoegaze, Kitty Moon shifts between hypnotic electronic textures, gritty guitar work, and powerful melodic vocals that occasionally erupt into screams. There's a clear sense of personality throughout the EP, even when the arrangements feel slightly unbalanced. The biggest issue is the vocal mixing, which sometimes pushes the vocals so far forward that the instrumental work struggles to make an impression. Still, the songwriting and vocal range make this a promising debut.
“Angelic Train” opens with an airy buildup, soft synths, and layered vocals that gradually establish a dreamy atmosphere. Glitchy electronic sounds and understated drums give the song a relaxed, slightly experimental feel, while the guitar work adds another layer of texture beneath the electronics. Kitty Moon has a high vocal register and an interesting way of stretching out words, bringing to mind the expressive delivery of '90s alternative and indie-rock singers. The production is clean, but her voice sits so prominently in the mix that some of the instrumental details become difficult to appreciate. It's not that the vocals are weak; quite the opposite. They have enough power to dominate the arrangement, and a little more space for the guitars and synths would help the song's atmosphere develop further. The soft guitar fade-out provides a fitting end to an otherwise engaging opener.
2025” takes the EP in a different direction, with reggae-inspired rhythmic patterns giving the song a more distinctive groove. The lower vocal register suits the Korean lyrics and the track's rougher instrumental style, while deep, distorted synths and guitars gradually become more prominent. The bass is particularly effective, creating a mesmerizing low-end presence without overwhelming the other instruments. The overall mix feels more balanced here, allowing the instrumental side to come through more clearly. Kitty Moon's vocal performance is a little less convincing in places, occasionally sounding nasal, but the shift toward distorted screams adds an interesting layer of aggression. The choice works well with the grittier arrangement, giving this reinterpretation of Seo Taiji and Boys' influential song a character that fits Kitty Moon's alternative-rock identity rather than simply copying its source.
8” leans further into electronic experimentation, opening with digital-sounding synths that create a hypnotic atmosphere. The drums are simple and repetitive, but that repetition works in the song's favor, locking into the synths and creating a steady, almost trance-like rhythm. Distant, plucky guitar lines provide a nice contrast before the track shifts into a more conventional alternative-rock direction. As the guitars become more prominent, Kitty Moon's vocals again threaten to overpower the instrumentation. However, the hypnotic synths and rhythmic patterns eventually return, restoring the song's most distinctive quality. Her voice sounds particularly strong here, with expressive inflections that capture the spirit of '90s alternative rock. It's difficult to tell whether the vocals are simply mixed too high or whether her natural projection is responsible, but she clearly has the range and presence to carry this kind of music. The contrast between electronic repetition and guitar-driven rock makes the track one of the EP's more interesting moments.
“유리커튼” closes the EP with a softer approach, built around subdued guitar riffs, distant synths, and gentle drumming. This arrangement suits Kitty Moon's voice particularly well because the softer delivery allows her range to come through without overwhelming the other instruments. She can still reach impressive high notes, but they feel more integrated into the song rather than competing with the mix. The restrained instrumentation creates an intimate atmosphere that contrasts with the heavier and more distorted moments elsewhere on the EP. It's a fitting closer that shows Kitty Moon doesn't need to rely on volume or aggressive vocal delivery to make an impression.
Koreander Smash is a promising first EP from an artist with a clear affection for the alternative-rock sounds of the '90s and 2000s. Kitty Moon's strongest asset is her voice, which has considerable range and personality, while the mix of distorted guitars, deep bass, and electronic textures gives the music a sound of its own. The main weakness is the inconsistent balance between vocals and instruments, particularly when the more forceful singing pushes the arrangement into the background. Nevertheless, each track explores a slightly different angle, from the dreamy opener to the hypnotic electronics of “8도시8” and the subdued closing track. With more attention to vocal mixing and further development of her instrumental arrangements, Kitty Moon could build on this debut and create an even more distinctive sound.
