While much of the spotlight continues to fall on scenes in North America and Europe, bands across Southeast Asia have been building a reputation for delivering some of the heaviest, most passionate hardcore in the underground. Among those emerging names is Kenya, a metallic hardcore outfit from Denpasar, Indonesia, whose debut full-length Trust No One proudly embraces everything that makes beatdown and street hardcore so addictive. Thick grooves, crushing breakdowns, booming bass, gang vocals, and unapologetic mosh parts dominate the record from beginning to end.

Rather than attempting to reinvent hardcore, Kenya focus on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well. The result is an album that constantly delivers satisfying moments of violence, even if its commitment to a familiar formula occasionally prevents it from reaching greater heights.

The record opens with "Blood Tears Family (B.T.F.)" featuring KMNG Serigala Malam, immediately establishing the suffocating atmosphere that defines much of the album. Slow-moving riffs grind forward beneath an enormous bass tone while the drums hit with tremendous force. The production gives the guitars impressive density without burying the rhythm section, allowing every breakdown to land with maximum impact.

The vocals immediately command attention through their deep, commanding delivery, while the gang vocals inject an undeniable sense of unity that perfectly suits the band's street-hardcore influences. Police sirens briefly interrupt the chaos before one of the album's largest breakdowns crashes down, enhanced by a perfectly timed 808 bass drop that shakes the entire mix. It's an explosive opener that instantly communicates exactly what Kenya are about.

"The Beginning" wastes little time maintaining that momentum. Faster drum patterns and sharper guitar work introduce a subtle death metal influence before the band settles back into another crushing groove. The drumming deserves praise here, balancing speed with enough restraint to keep every transition feeling natural. Once again, the gang vocals provide plenty of energy and crowd participation, making it easy to imagine these songs causing complete chaos in a live setting.

However, one issue begins to reveal itself early. Several tracks conclude almost as quickly as they begin. While the concise songwriting keeps the record moving at a relentless pace, some breakdowns arrive before enough tension has been created, reducing the impact they could have had with slightly longer buildups.

Fortunately, "No Hate" demonstrates stronger pacing. The slower structure allows the riffs to breathe while the thick bass and harsh vocals create one of the album's most satisfying grooves. The first breakdown lands with tremendous force thanks to the patient buildup preceding it, although the second doesn't quite reach the same devastating heights. Even so, the song showcases Kenya's growing confidence as songwriters and proves they understand that heaviness often comes from anticipation as much as raw aggression.

"Getting Stronger" injects welcome variety into the record. Opening with a spoken sample before launching into energetic drum fills and driving riffs, the track quickly distinguishes itself from what came before. The standout moment arrives during its infectious two-step section, where the guitars lock into an irresistible groove while the drums create one of the album's most danceable rhythms. These moments provide an important reminder that Kenya can do more than simply write breakdowns—they know how to create movement in several different ways.

"This Reality" continues blending chunky riffing with thick bass and another well-placed 808-assisted breakdown. The slower closing section allows the drummer to showcase thunderous double-kick work while maintaining the song's crushing momentum. Although it may not stand among the album's biggest highlights, it remains another consistently enjoyable hardcore anthem.

As the album progresses into "No Justice," the downside of the band's formula begins to emerge more clearly. The ingredients remain familiar: pounding drums, thick bass, gang vocals, and heavy breakdowns. While none of these elements are poorly executed, they begin to blur together without enough fresh ideas separating one song from the next. The breakdown itself is solid, but it lacks the surprise and impact found earlier on the record.

Thankfully, "Sanity" restores much of that lost momentum. Stronger riff writing, sharper guitar work, and another memorable slower breakdown make it one of the more engaging tracks in the latter half. The simplicity of the songwriting actually works in the band's favor here, allowing every groove to land naturally without unnecessary complexity.

Closing track "Depends On U" perfectly summarizes the album's overall identity. The deep bass, crushing grooves, harsh vocals, and pounding drums all remain highly effective, while the slower sections continue to provide the record's biggest highlights. Interesting guitar strumming patterns and another massive 808 drop add enough personality to prevent the finale from feeling entirely repetitive, although by this point the similarities between several songs have become more noticeable.

What makes Trust No One enjoyable is how confidently Kenya embrace their influences. They never pretend to be anything other than a pit-first hardcore band, and they execute that vision with conviction. The production remains consistently thick throughout, giving every instrument plenty of power without sacrificing clarity. The bass tone is especially impressive, constantly adding another layer of heaviness beneath the guitars, while the gang vocals create an authentic sense of community that perfectly complements the band's street-hardcore identity.

The biggest limitation lies within the songwriting itself. Many tracks rely on similar structures, moving from groove to breakdown without introducing enough variation in between. A few additional tempo changes, longer tension-building passages, or more adventurous arrangements would help separate the songs and give the album greater replay value.

Even so, those criticisms never overshadow the record's strengths. Kenya clearly understand what hardcore fans want: memorable riffs, devastating breakdowns, crushing low end, and songs built for stagedives rather than radio play. Trust No One delivers exactly that. It may not reinvent beatdown hardcore, but it doesn't need to. Instead, it provides a confident, relentlessly heavy introduction to a band that already possesses the tools needed to become one of Indonesia's strongest hardcore exports.

With tighter songwriting and a willingness to push beyond familiar formulas, Kenya have every opportunity to become an even bigger force within Southeast Asia's rapidly growing hardcore scene.
