Four Year Strong - analysis paralysis Review

Return to Music Reviews 2024

I guess four-year-olds got tired of being easycore music and decided to pick up right up after every time I die because this new album from them is crazy heavy!!! Four-year-olds strong have dabbled in heavy sounds and experimenting with their music, but this feels a bit different. The album has more of a visceral and raw sound to it that works well. The riffs are heavy and trippy at times, the drumming has a deep sound that just resonates within you, the bass has a deep feeling to it, and the vocals are hard as nails. The riffs throughout this album are quite good, going from heavy industrial riffs to trippy psychedelic riffs, but they also play some interesting styles. Like in the song “Paranoia,” the riffs are so unique and refreshing to hear. Or on “Rollercoaster," the riffs over the breakdown sound mesmerizing. The drumming is tight from start to finish, and they have some dynamic playing, like on “Maybe It's Me,” by adding some snare drum rim playing that spices up the song. The bass is smooth and groovy and just has a lot of feeling to it when you hear it. The vocals do a great job of harmonizing with each other (they have been doing it for over 20 years now, so they better be good at this point, lol) like on “bad habit” or "uncooked." A good chunk of this album is pretty heavy, like with the songs “daddy of mine” or "aftermath/afterthought,” but they still have some softer jams like “STFIL” and “How do I let you go?” Its great that these songs were put towards the end because it makes the flow of the album go well, having fun and intense songs for the first half that are more like every time I die or turnstile, but by the end we have these turnover/superheaven style songs that feel very earned by the time we get to them. The production sounds super crisp and mixed well. It's still a very four-year string, but they are expanding on the sound in so many ways. This is ignorant music for the nerds and dorks, and I love it!
