Ekulu have unscrewed my head in terms of what a thrashy/crossoever band can sound like. These new yorkers are bringing a new wave of California thrash, and, for what they try and do, I'm a fan of it. The thing that stands out most for me is their vocalists' unique vocal patterns and usage of their voices. He really uses it as an instrument to demonstrate the different uses he has for it. High-pitched vocals to low, tough guy-style hardcore vocals. He got range. The drums are clean and solid. They pack a punch. The bass is crispy and fun. The only drawback I have is the use of the guitars. They sound good, and playing the riffs is fun, I bet, but they seem very repetitive throughout the album. They are very thrashy but can get old. The production throughout the album is solid. The mixing is a bit weird at times but overall fine. I think the music they make is more fun in person, but on the wax, eh?
