Admire The Grim - Resist Review

Return to Music Reviews 2025

Admire the Grin, a Finnish melodic death metal band, deliver a collection of fast, groove-driven tracks that show considerable growth since their debut. The songwriting relies on familiar metal structures, and there are moments when the music feels predictable, but the album has enough strong instrumental performances and flashes of creativity to keep things interesting. The band clearly understand how to write heavy, energetic music; the challenge is turning their individual ideas into consistently memorable songs. At times, they pack too much into a composition, while elsewhere, riffs and vocal patterns repeat long enough to lose their impact. Even so, this is a worthwhile step forward for the band.

The guitars are a mixed bag. Some riffs follow familiar melodic death metal formulas, particularly on “Crescent Moon,” where the heaviness is there but the songwriting doesn't offer many surprises. However, the band sound considerably more convincing when they introduce faster passages, rhythmic changes, and melodic leads. “Resist” is a highlight, combining aggressive, tightly played riffs with strong dual-guitar harmonies. The heavier approach gives the track a sharper identity, while the solo work provides a welcome break from the main riffing. “Choke on Your Words” also benefits from a more engaging balance of groove and aggression, demonstrating what the band can achieve when the songwriting and performances work together.

The bass is one of the album's most pleasant surprises. Rather than disappearing beneath the guitars, it remains audible across most of the tracklist, bringing thickness and depth to the arrangements. “Rivers to Surge” showcases how effectively it can drive a song forward, adding weight without overwhelming the mix. The acoustic instrumental “Acoustic Melodies from the Past and Present” reveals a gentler side of the instrument, with the bass and guitar creating a warm atmosphere while subtle violin parts introduce a sense of mystery. The interlude is a welcome change of pace that gives the listener room to breathe before the heavier material resumes.

The drumming is another major strength. The performance moves comfortably between speed, precision, and groove, helping the songs maintain their energy even when the guitar parts become less distinctive. “Revolutions” and “Hypocrite” feature particularly engaging rhythmic work, with the drummer adding a looser, more playful feel to the music without sacrificing power. Some sections could use tighter transitions, but the percussion consistently gives the arrangements momentum. The production also works in the drums' favor, particularly the snare, which cuts through the mix with a sharp, satisfying punch.

Vocally, the album feels less developed than the instrumental performances. The delivery generally suits the melodic death metal style, but the limited variation makes some sections feel interchangeable. “Choke on Your Words” is one of the strongest performances, with raw emotion and aggression giving the song a greater sense of urgency. “Mad Queen of the Second Sun” also benefits from the connection between the vocals and the instruments, particularly as the epic riffs and faster drumming build around the vocal lines. There are promising moments throughout the album, but the singer could do more to vary the delivery and bring additional character to the less intense passages.

The production is solid overall, although the backing vocals and clean singing could have been handled better. On “Crescent Moon” and “Hypocrite,” the backing vocals are too subdued, losing some of their impact beneath the instrumentation. Clean vocals elsewhere also struggle to make themselves heard clearly. Giving these parts more space in the mix would help the vocal arrangements contribute more effectively to the songs instead of getting lost behind the guitars.

The album's biggest weakness remains its inconsistency. Some tracks deliver memorable riffs, strong grooves, and dynamic performances, while others settle into fairly standard melodic death metal patterns. The reworked older material benefits from a tighter, more developed arrangement, showing the value of a more considered build-up and better interaction between the instruments. “No Limits,” by comparison, sticks closely to familiar riffing and drumming, with a few enjoyable grooves but relatively little that lingers after the song ends.

Overall, Admire the Grin have made a noticeable improvement over their debut. The bass and drums provide a strong foundation, and tracks like “Resist” and “Choke on Your Words” show that the band can write material with genuine force and personality. The predictable guitar patterns and occasionally buried vocals still need attention, but there is enough here to interest fans of melodic death metal. With more variation in the vocals, clearer backing parts, and tighter songwriting, Admire the Grin could turn their flashes of brilliance into a more cohesive and memorable release.

Puutteistaan huolimatta albumi on selvä askel eteenpäin yhtyeen uralla.

Kitaratyöskentely on albumin epätasaisimpia osa-alueita.

Basso on yksi albumin positiivisimmista yllätyksistä. Akustinen instrumentaalikappale “Acoustic Melodies from the Past and Present” puolestaan tuo esiin soittimen pehmeämmän puolen.

“No Limits” puolestaan pysyttelee tutuissa riffi- ja rumpukuvioissa.

Kaiken kaikkiaan Admire the Grin on ottanut selvän harppauksen eteenpäin debyyttialbumiinsa verrattuna.
