Twitching Tongues - Twitchfits' Vol. 3 Review

After two rounds of resurrecting the spirit of the Misfits through their own unmistakable Twitching Tongues filter, the band has returned once more to the graveyard gates for another eerie, blood-soaked celebration of punk’s most macabre legends. Twitch’fits Vol. 3 isn’t just another tribute — it’s a culmination. It finds the group refining their approach, tightening their focus, and polishing their sound into what might be their most immersive and confident homage yet.

Where Vol. 1 thrived on raw, impulsive energy and Vol. 2 wandered into darker, moodier territory with deep cuts and shadowy textures, Vol. 3 strikes the perfect balance between the two. It’s shorter, sharper, and more purposeful — a five-track séance soaked in Halloween atmosphere and executed with precision. Every element feels deliberate: the haunted vocal layers, the chest-rattling bass, the grimy, chugging guitars that nod to the band’s hardcore roots while still honoring the Misfits’ undead melodicism.

Rather than trying to outpace or outshine the originals, Twitching Tongues choose to sink deeper into the Misfits’ natural darkness, exploring the eerie heart of each song and letting the melodies breathe. It’s less about replication and more about reanimation — taking familiar shapes and breathing new, spectral life into them.

The opening track, “Cough/Cool,” sets the tone immediately. It’s slow, smoky, and drenched in atmosphere. Colin Young’s deep, haunted baritone cuts through the murk like a spirit calling from another realm — confident, calm, and unnervingly controlled. It’s a bold choice to open with such restraint, but it works. The band clearly trusts their command of mood over speed, allowing the tension to simmer instead of explode. The rhythm section locks in with weight and purpose, the bass and drums creating a low-end fog that gives Colin’s voice all the space it needs to haunt.

From there, “Attitude” does exactly what its title promises. Colin snarls and struts his way through the track, his delivery dripping with swagger and dark humor. The band sounds both fierce and effortless, their chemistry tighter than ever. Every hit of the snare and every growl of the bass feels perfectly placed, captured by a clean, muscular mix that gives each instrument its own breathing room. There’s a palpable sense of joy in the performance — a feeling that Twitching Tongues are reveling in these songs, not merely respecting them.

“Ghouls Night Out” leans into groove and melody, offering one of the strongest vocal performances of Colin’s career. The chorus feels ghostly and hypnotic, lingering long after the track fades, aided by smart use of reverb and delay that gives the song a spectral sense of space. Then comes “Angelfuck,” perhaps the most striking moment of the EP — a surprisingly beautiful performance where Colin’s vocals take on an almost crooning quality. His voice glides over a foundation of thick bass and crisp, restrained drums, transforming the song into something both pure and eerie, like a love song sung from the other side.

Finally, “Dig Up Her Bones” closes the EP with cinematic flair. The band leans into the melancholy and majesty of the Misfits’ most enduring anthem, turning it into something that feels like a lost track from a forgotten Halloween soundtrack. The howling background effects, cavernous reverb, and lush low-end mix create an atmosphere that’s both intimate and larger-than-life. It’s a fitting finale — eerie, heartfelt, and perfectly haunting.

Across Twitch’fits Vol. 3, the production stands as a major leap forward. The band’s sound has never felt this massive or this balanced. The bass is gloriously dirty without overwhelming the mix, the drums hit with satisfying punch, and the guitars grind with a textured grit that feels simultaneously vintage and modern. It’s clear that Twitching Tongues have mastered their craft within this concept — no longer just covering Misfits songs, but reanimating them in their own image.

Vol. 3 feels like the full realization of what the Twitch’fits project was always meant to be: a true resurrection. It strips away the excess, trims the fat, and focuses on what matters — atmosphere, emotion, and sheer sonic presence. The Halloween spirit is stronger than ever, the performances are airtight, and the production finally captures the massive, ghostly energy that the band has been chasing since the beginning.

If Vol. 1 was the spark, and Vol. 2 the dark descent, then Vol. 3 is the resurrection — a haunting, heavy, and heartfelt conclusion that cements the Twitch’fits legacy. It’s spooky, soulful, and sonically colossal — their best-sounding release to date. If this is indeed how the trilogy ends, it’s one hell of a way to go out.
