Regulate - Self-Titled Review

Return to Music Reviews 2024

Regulate is a hardcore band that infuses punk, indie, and emo-like parts into their sound, and honestly speaking, they sound more impressive when doing more light and ambient music than hard-hitting music. The big difference I noticed here was the vocals. The unlcean vocals dont even come close to how good the clean vocals are on this album. Either the main vocalist or the backing vocals have some impressive singing abilities because whenever they switch to clean singing, the emotions and the song just get turned up to 11 and just sound fantastic. Like on the opening track, “in the moment." The song is a good hardcore song at the start, with deep bass playing, fast-ripping guitars, and deep-sounding drums. Then out of nowhere you get clean vocals and some nice emo like meioc that just blows you away. They even take things further on “hair, and create an amibent and emo-like song with wonderful clean vocals, super personal lyrics, and music that is so soft and clean. You get more of that emo-like sound on the instrumental track “ugata, which has some of the most interesting drumming and ambient-like guitars. So when you get back to their harder songs, you feel a bit disappointed they don't do more cleans or light playing. The hardcore songs here have some solid riffs and heavy breakdowns, but they don't hit on an emotional level like those softer songs. However, the heavy songs have a nice afi and biohazard feel to them, so you get some good hard songs for sure. I just think this band might be better as an emo-like band.
