Softest Of Pillows
Leaveourtears have a real talent for making simple musical ideas feel emotionally devastating. On vivid pillow, the South Korean shoegaze project builds a world out of washed-out guitars, deep bass, restrained drumming and vocals that sound as though they're drifting in and out of a fading dream. Across four tracks, Kim Jeonghoon explores the space between beauty and emptiness, allowing the music to feel comforting on the surface while carrying something much heavier underneath. The guitars rarely need to do anything particularly complicated to leave an impression. Instead, the melodies stretch and dissolve into the surrounding noise, creating an atmosphere that feels fragile, lonely and strangely intimate. It's the kind of EP that can make a small change in a guitar tone feel like an entire emotional revelation.
“We need to sink” opens with slow, distorted guitar strums that immediately establish a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere. There's a genuine feeling of pain in the music, but it's delivered so gently that the sadness becomes almost comforting. The guitars gradually grow louder and thicker, creating a small swell of emotion before the arrangement retreats again. It's a short opening, but it works beautifully as an introduction to the EP's world. Rather than trying to grab your attention with a huge riff or dramatic vocal entrance, Leaveourtears slowly draws you into the sound and lets the atmosphere do the work.
“cocoon” expands that approach considerably. Distant, distorted guitars begin quietly before enormous, sharp drums suddenly give the song a much more imposing presence. A thick bassline fills out the lower end while layers of ringing guitars build a wall of sound around the rhythm section. The arrangement eventually moves into an alternative-rock and grunge-influenced groove, with tight, powerful drums and hazy vocals that feel distant without disappearing completely. There's a little of Fleshwater's hollow, emotionally blurred vocal atmosphere here, although Leaveourtears maintain a softer and more dreamlike character. One of the song's biggest strengths is the production: even when the guitars become dense, the instrumental details remain audible rather than disappearing beneath the distortion. The music repeatedly pulls back into quieter passages before building again, giving the heavier moments a natural impact. It's a fantastic example of how shoegaze can feel both enormous and intimate at the same time.
“look at me” is even more restrained, opening with soft drums and slow guitar lines that carry a deeply mournful quality. The riffs feel simple, but there's an unmistakable sense of pain running through them, reinforced by the washed-out vocals and steady percussion. As the song develops, the guitars gradually expand into a more immersive wall of sound, while the vocals retain a distant, almost accepting quality. It feels as though the music is trying to disguise something deeply painful beneath its gentle exterior. Yet the emotion never becomes melodramatic. Instead, the song finds its strength in the space between the instruments, the steady pace and the way each melody seems to linger just a little longer than expected. There's so much feeling here without the need for complicated arrangements or a dramatic climax. It's quietly heartbreaking.
Then comes “pure,” a ten-minute closing track that turns the EP into something genuinely special. Soft static and distant guitar tones establish a hypnotic atmosphere before the bass and drums gradually settle into a slow, steady rhythm. The vocals arrive gently, carrying the same hazy quality that defines the rest of the release, while the arrangement slowly grows around them. The song feels strangely cathartic, as if something is being mourned and reborn at the same time. As the distorted guitars wash over one another, the music creates the sensation of watching a memory slowly disintegrate in front of you. You want to hold onto it, but every attempt seems to make it slip further away. The emotional weight is almost uncomfortable, yet the song never needs to force that feeling through overly dramatic instrumentation. Its patient development makes every change in texture meaningful. When the music finally begins fading into increasingly distant distortion, the transition to the soft piano outro feels devastatingly real. That final piano passage leaves you sitting with the sadness rather than resolving it neatly. Given the track's connection to the themes of Robert Schumann's “Träumerei,” the ending also reinforces the EP's tension between dreams, memories and reality.
vivid pillow is an exceptional shoegaze release because it understands that emotional intensity doesn't always require volume or complexity. The first three tracks establish a beautifully consistent atmosphere, but “pure” elevates the entire experience by giving those ideas room to unfold over an extended period. The combination of distorted guitars, powerful yet restrained drums and distant vocals creates music that feels both fragile and immense. Nothing here feels overly polished for the sake of perfection, and the small shifts in tone make the songs feel human. It's a deeply melancholic EP, but there's something strangely comforting about the way it allows sadness to exist without trying to explain it away. Leaveourtears have made something beautiful, painful and genuinely memorable.
“look at me”는 한층 절제된 접근을 보여 준다.
