Indonesia’s hardcore scene continues to produce bands that understand how to make heavy music feel physical, and Kenya are a strong example of that. Hailing from Denpasar, Bali, Kenya have established themselves within the modern Indonesian hardcore scene by combining metallic hardcore, beatdown influence, aggressive groove, and the raw attitude of street-level hardcore. Their debut LP, Trust No One, established that identity with a particularly heavy and abrasive approach. With Deeper Struggle, Kenya continue developing that foundation while introducing a cleaner and more controlled production style.

Across five tracks, Deeper Struggle delivers sharp guitars, thick bass, hard-hitting drums, and harsh vocals while maintaining the band's commitment to groove-driven hardcore. The EP feels more refined than some of Kenya’s earlier material without abandoning the aggression that makes their sound work. The biggest difference is the production. Everything feels tighter and more defined, allowing individual instruments to come through more clearly. At the same time, that cleaner approach slightly reduces some of the filthy, overwhelming impact that made Kenya’s earlier material so effective.

“Nothing Real” immediately establishes this new direction. The track begins with deep, ringing guitar tones before shifting into sharper and faster riffing. Kenya’s guitar work remains one of their strongest weapons, balancing metallic precision with hardcore aggression without becoming unnecessarily technical. The bass initially sits further back before becoming more noticeable once the full band kicks in, helping create a heavier foundation underneath the riffs. The song works well as an introduction, although it doesn’t quite reach the crushing impact of some of Kenya’s previous material.

“Crown” is where the cleaner production becomes especially noticeable. Deep double kicks, dense guitar riffs, and a much more prominent bass presence give the track considerable weight. The kick drum hits particularly hard, while the bass provides a thick, almost plucky low-end character underneath the guitars. Kenya slow things down during the middle of the song, creating anticipation for the inevitable breakdown. Unfortunately, this is where the EP begins to reveal one of its biggest weaknesses. The slower section feels somewhat flat, and even the 808-style drop into the breakdown doesn’t deliver the level of devastation that the buildup seems to promise.

That doesn’t make “Crown” a bad track. In fact, there is plenty to appreciate in the instrumentation. The problem is that Kenya have written riffs and rhythmic sections strong enough to make you expect something absolutely punishing at the climax, and when that moment arrives, it feels more solid than spectacular.

“Soul Is Weak” benefits from moving at a faster pace. The tighter riffing, aggressive drum fills, harsh vocals, and thumping bass give the song a greater sense of urgency. This is Kenya sounding more immediately aggressive, and the increased momentum allows the individual instrumental parts to work together more effectively. The rhythm section is particularly strong here, with the bass and drums creating a groove that gives the guitars plenty of room to attack.

The slower midsection eventually builds toward another groove-heavy breakdown. Again, the payoff is effective without being completely devastating. However, the difference here is that the song’s overall momentum is strong enough that the breakdown feels like a natural extension of the track rather than the sole reason for its existence.

“Here and Forever” brings Kenya back toward the deeper and slower side of their sound. A low drum buildup introduces the track before the band moves into tight guitar riffs, straightforward drumming, and deep bass. There are some excellent hollow-sounding drum fills throughout the song, and Kenya continue demonstrating their ability to make relatively simple riffs feel heavy through tone and rhythm rather than technical complexity.

The track also contains some of the EP’s better groove-oriented guitar work. Deep chugs and heavier rhythmic passages give the song a satisfying physical quality. Once again, however, the eventual breakdown feels somewhat underwhelming compared with the strength of what comes before it. It works, but it doesn’t completely knock you over.

“No Guts” closes the EP with some of Kenya’s fastest and tightest playing. The guitars are sharp and dense, the bass remains heavy, and the drumming provides plenty of movement through quick fills, tight cymbal work, and deep double-kick patterns. Gunshot samples add another layer of aggression and fit the confrontational atmosphere of the song.

The rhythm section is particularly impressive here. The kick drum carries plenty of weight, while the cymbals and fills keep the track moving instead of allowing the repetitive riffing to become stagnant. Kenya also introduce some additional groove toward the end, giving the song a little more variation.

Unfortunately, the breakdown falls into the same issue that affects several moments across Deeper Struggle. It isn’t bad, but it feels somewhat bland compared with the strength of the riffs and drums surrounding it. Kenya have clearly learned how to build anticipation, but they still need to work on making the final impact feel proportional to that buildup.

The guitars are easily the most consistent element throughout Deeper Struggle. Kenya understand that hardcore doesn’t require complicated riffing to be effective. Their best moments come from simple, sharp, dense guitar ideas that create physical movement. The band moves comfortably between ringing guitar parts, metallic riffing, fast hardcore passages, deep chugs, and slower groove-oriented sections.

The bass is also more important than it might initially appear. At times it sits relatively subtly beneath the guitars, but when Kenya bring it forward, it adds considerable weight. The thick bass on “Crown” gives the song additional punch, while the groovier bass work throughout “Soul Is Weak” and “Here and Forever” helps make the slower passages feel fuller.

The drums are another major strength. The cleaner production gives them more definition, and Kenya make particularly good use of the double kick. The massive kick drum on “Crown,” fast fills on “Soul Is Weak,” hollow rhythmic fills on “Here and Forever,” and tight cymbal work on “No Guts” all demonstrate a band that has become more controlled without losing its aggression.

The vocals remain heavy and abrasive, providing the necessary hardcore bite throughout the EP. Compared with some of Kenya’s earlier work, however, they feel slightly more restrained and less massive in the mix. In this case, that isn’t necessarily a negative. The cleaner production gives the guitars, bass, and drums more room to breathe, resulting in a more balanced overall sound.

Ultimately, Deeper Struggle feels like a natural progression for Kenya. The band hasn’t abandoned the metallic hardcore and beatdown foundation established on Trust No One, but they have clearly become more focused on tightening their sound and improving the overall presentation.

“Nothing Real,” “Crown,” “Soul Is Weak,” “Here and Forever,” and “No Guts” each showcase different parts of Kenya’s identity, from fast metallic riffing to deep grooves and heavy rhythmic sections. The biggest problem is that the EP doesn’t always capitalize on its strongest ideas. Kenya are very good at building toward breakdowns, but several of those climactic moments simply don’t hit with the force the surrounding music suggests they should.

That said, the weakness is more about missed potential than poor execution. The riffs are strong. The drums are powerful. The bass provides plenty of weight. The vocals remain aggressive. Most importantly, the band still possesses the raw hardcore energy that made them stand out in the first place.

Deeper Struggle shows Kenya moving forward rather than simply attempting to recreate Trust No One. The cleaner production and tighter musicianship suggest a band becoming more confident in what they want their sound to be. If Kenya can take the aggression and songwriting already present here and make those climactic moments hit harder, there is plenty of room for them to push this sound much further.

For fans of Indonesian hardcore, metallic hardcore, beatdown, and groove-heavy heavy music, Deeper Struggle is a worthwhile listen. It may not be as immediately devastating as Kenya’s earlier material, but it demonstrates that the band is still developing — and that could make whatever comes next even heavier.
