Gurriers sound like a band learning how to make their noise hit even harder without losing the rough edges that made them interesting in the first place. On their second album, Nobody’s Coming To Save You, the Dublin five-piece stretch their post-punk foundation into grunge, noise rock, dance-punk and hazy alternative rock, creating a record that can feel both hypnotic and completely overwhelming. There's a real sense of control behind the mess, with simple drum patterns, thick basslines and distorted guitars gradually building into enormous walls of sound. The vocals are often washed out, but that blurred quality fits the band's restless, slightly grimy atmosphere. Rather than simply making every song louder and faster, Gurriers understand the impact of contrast, letting quieter moments draw you in before the noise swallows everything again.
The title track sets the tone with soft, reverberating guitar lines, restrained drums and vocals that carry a loose Britpop swagger. The arrangement stays relatively simple, allowing the low, plucked guitars and steady rhythm to establish the mood before everything expands into a much bigger instrumental wall. The drums don't need complicated fills to make an impact; they hit hard because the band leaves enough room for them to breathe. As the vocals become increasingly hazy, the song builds toward an ending where the repeated title line cuts through the dense guitars, bass and drums. “Party Lines” approaches things from another angle, opening with a spoken-word sample discussing poverty and global inequality before launching into faster, fuzzier indie-rock riffs. The percussion becomes a real highlight here, particularly the bongo-like patterns that give the track a funky, danceable groove beneath all the distortion. That combination of political commentary, abrasive guitars and unexpected rhythmic details gives the song a personality of its own.
“Shades” pushes further into distorted, almost garage-rock territory, with catchy, straightforward drums supporting a guitar sound that recalls some of the scruffier alternative bands of the 2000s. The washed-out vocal delivery, occasionally sounding like a scream disappearing into the mix, adds to the track's appeal rather than making it feel unfinished. Then “Pins” pulls the energy back considerably. Soft, muffled guitars and relaxed vocals creep in gradually, creating an intimate atmosphere before deep bass, drums and heavier riffs enter almost effortlessly. Just as importantly, those heavier elements eventually fade away again. That ability to introduce weight without destroying a song's quieter
character is one of the album's strongest qualities. “Today Is Not Enough” develops the idea further through repetitive guitar patterns and tight, uncomplicated drumming. Its hypnotic opening gradually becomes a distorted vortex of bass and guitars, drawing the listener into the noise rather than throwing it at them immediately. There is a compelling push and pull between calm and abrasion here, and the lyrical imagery adds another layer to the experience.
“Drones” begins slowly, with grainy textures and soft percussion that make the track feel almost like the entrance music for a particularly sinister superhero or villain. There's a dark undercurrent even before the vocals arrive, and the slow build gives the eventual explosion of distorted bass, faster drums and shouted vocals a satisfying release. The song moves quickly despite its gradual construction, proving that Gurriers know how to make a long build feel worthwhile. “Nothing Happens Twice” is more immediately catchy, with a chunky bassline, distorted higher-register guitars and a chorus that feels built to be shouted back at the band. The vocal delivery has a natural rhythm, while the heavier chorus gives the track a strong center without sacrificing the band's hazy production.
The closing stretch is particularly effective. “Waiting For Fisher” combines fast, washed-out guitar lines with tighter drums and a deep, buzzing bass that seems permanently on the verge of blowing out. There's an anxious quality to the riffs, while the ghostly vocals occasionally bring Queens of the Stone Age to mind without feeling like a direct imitation. “I Wish I Was” takes a more vulnerable approach, pairing slow guitars and deep kick drums with vocals that sound genuinely bruised. The repeated phrase becomes increasingly sad as the song builds toward an eruption of massive bass and solid drum work. “Crybaby” keeps that weight in place for the finale, using slow, deep rhythms, dark vocals and unusually thick, twangy guitars to leave the album on a brooding note.
Nobody’s Coming To Save You is a strong step forward for Gurriers, balancing the rawness of their noise-rock roots with more deliberate songwriting and a broader range of moods. Some vocal passages are so washed out that they lose definition, and the album occasionally leans heavily on familiar post-punk repetition. But the riffs have character, the bass sounds enormous, and the rhythm section consistently gives the songs their own physical groove. Most importantly, the quieter passages never feel like filler; they make the loud moments hit harder. Gurriers have made an album that is abrasive without being one-note, catchy without feeling polished smooth, and ambitious without losing its bite.
Is léir ar Nobody’s Coming To Save You go bhfuil Gurriers ag foghlaim conas a gceol torannach a dhéanamh níos troime agus níos éifeachtaí gan na himill gharbha a d’fhág suimiúil iad ón tús a chailleadh. Ar a ndara halbam, leathnaíonn an cúigear ó Bhaile Átha Cliath a bhfuaim iar-phunc amach i dtreo an ghráinse, an rac-cheoil thorraigh, an dance-punk agus rac-cheol malartach atmaisféarach. Is albam é a bhíonn mealltach agus hipnotach uaireanta, ach a fhéadann a bheith thar a bheith dian freisin. Tá smacht taobh thiar den torann: drumaí simplí, línte bas tiubha agus giotáir shaobhtha a fhásann de réir a chéile ina mballaí ollmhóra fuaime. Bíonn na guthanna doiléir go minic, ach oireann an éifeacht sin don atmaisféar míshlachtmhar, corraitheach atá ag an mbanna. Tuigeann Gurriers cumhacht na codarsnachta. Tarraingíonn na codanna ciúine isteach thú sula n-imíonn gach rud faoin torann arís.
Leagann an t-amhrán teidil an dúshraith le giotáir bhoga lán le macalla, drumaí srianta agus guth a bhfuil beagán den mhuinín dhána atá le fáil i mBritpop ag baint leis. Fanann an socrú measartha simplí ar dtús, agus ligeann na giotáir ísle, phioctha agus an rithim sheasmhach don atmaisféar forbairt sula n-éiríonn an fhuaim i bhfad níos mó. Ní bhíonn gá le líon mór athruithe sna drumaí chun tionchar a imirt; buaileann siad go láidir mar go bhfágann an banna dóthain spáis dóibh. De réir mar a éiríonn na guthanna níos doiléire, tógann an t-amhrán i dtreo críoch mhór ina seasann líne an teidil amach tríd an mballa tiubh giotár, bas agus drumaí. Glacann “Party Lines” cur chuige eile. Tosaíonn sé le sampla cainte faoi bhochtaineacht agus éagothroime dhomhanda sula bpléascann na giotáir indie níos tapúla agus níos doiléire isteach. Seasann an cnagcheol amach anseo, go háirithe na patrúin atá cosúil le bongónna agus a chuireann rithim rinceach, bheo leis an gceol. Tugann an meascán den tráchtaireacht shóisialta, de na giotáir gharbha agus de na rithimí neamhghnácha féiniúlacht láidir don amhrán.
Téann “Shades” níos faide i dtreo rac-cheoil gharáiste, le drumaí simplí mealltacha agus fuaim ghiotáir a chuireann roinnt de na bannaí malartacha ba gharbha sna 2000idí i gcuimhne duit. Cuireann an stíl amhránaíochta dhoiléir, a bhíonn cosúil le scread a imíonn isteach sa mheascán uaireanta, go mór leis an atmaisféar. Ansin laghdaíonn “Pins” an fuinneamh. Tagann giotáir bhoga mhaolaithe agus guth suaimhneach isteach go mall, rud a chruthaíonn atmaisféar pearsanta sula dtagann an bas domhain, na drumaí agus na riffanna níos troime isteach go nádúrtha. Agus imíonn siad arís de réir a chéile. Tá an cumas sin ag Gurriers an ceol a dhéanamh trom gan an carachtar ciúin a mhilleadh ar cheann de na láidreachtaí is mó atá ag an albam. Leanann “Today Is Not Enough” an smaoineamh sin le patrúin ghiotáir athchleachtacha agus drumaí daingean simplí. Fásann an tús hipnotach ina chorraíl mhór bas agus giotáir shaobhtha, ag tarraingt an éisteora isteach sa torann seachas é a chaitheamh ina éadan láithreach. Oibríonn an teannas idir an suaimhneas agus an fhuaim gharbh go han-mhaith anseo.
Tosaíonn “Drones” go mall, le huigeachtaí garbha agus cnagcheol bog a chuireann ceol iontrála laoch nó drochlaoch thar a bheith bagrach i gcuimhne duit. Tá scáil dhorcha ar an amhrán sula gcloistear an guth fiú, agus tugann an tógáil fhada deis don phléasc de bhas saobhtha, de dhrumaí níos tapúla agus de ghuthanna scairteacha an tionchar ceart a imirt. In ainneoin an tógáil mhall, téann an t-amhrán thart go tapa agus taispeánann sé go bhfuil a fhios ag Gurriers conas fanacht leis an nóiméad ceart. Tá “Nothing Happens Twice” níos mealltaí ar an gcéad éisteacht, le bas tiubh, giotáir shaobhtha arda agus curfá a oireann do lucht féachana ag scairteadh in éineacht leis an mbanna. Tá rithim nádúrtha sa ghlór, agus tugann an curfá trom lárphointe láidir don amhrán gan an táirgeadh doiléir a chailleadh.
Tá an chuid dheireanach den albam thar a bheith éifeachtach. Meascann “Waiting For Fisher” giotáir thapa dhoiléire le drumaí daingne agus bas domhain a bhfuil an chuma air go bhfuil sé ar tí pléascadh. Tá imní agus teannas sna riffanna, agus cuireann na guthanna taibhsiúla Queens of the Stone Age i gcuimhne uaireanta gan aithris dhíreach a dhéanamh orthu. Glacann “I Wish I Was” cur chuige níos leochailí, le giotáir mhalla, drumaí doimhne agus guth lán le pian. Éiríonn an athrá níos brónaí de réir mar a thógann an t-amhrán i dtreo pléasctha de bhas ollmhór agus drumaí cumhachtacha. Coinníonn “Crybaby” an meáchan sin go deireadh, le rithimí mall doimhne, guthanna dorcha agus giotáir throma a bhfuil ton sainiúil acu.
Is céim láidir chun cinn é Nobody’s Coming To Save You do Gurriers. Coinníonn sé garbhacht fhréamhacha rac-cheoil thorraigh an bhanna agus tugann sé níos mó aire do struchtúr na n-amhrán agus do réimse níos leithne atmaisféar. Uaireanta bíonn na guthanna chomh doiléir sin go gcailltear cuid dá soiléireacht, agus braitheann roinnt codanna go mór ar athrá iar-phunc atá cloiste cheana. Ach tá carachtar sna riffanna, tá an bas ollmhór, agus tugann an rannóg rithime groove fisiciúil dá gcuid amhrán. Níos tábhachtaí fós, ní bhraitheann na codanna ciúine mar líonadh ama; cuireann siad níos mó fórsa leis na codanna troma. Tá albam cruthaithe ag Gurriers atá garbh gan a bheith aonchineálach, mealltach gan a bheith róshnasta, agus uaillmhianach gan a chuid géire a chailleadh.
