Horses of the wild!
Ebdromeer are making a strong case for Kazakhstan's emerging blackgaze scene with Choir of Horses, a debut EP that blends the bleak atmosphere of black metal with the expansive textures of post-rock and shoegaze. Hailing from Almaty, the band combine distant screams, mournful guitar melodies and deep, deliberate drumming to create music that feels both emotionally heavy and strangely hypnotic. The four tracks aren't always perfectly executed, and some riffs sound a little clunky or rough around the edges, but there's a compelling atmosphere running throughout the release. Ebdromeer understand that blackgaze doesn't need to be relentlessly fast or aggressive to make an impact. Sometimes a simple guitar line, a distant scream or a slowly building drum pattern can communicate more than another barrage of blast beats.
“Caged Bird” opens with softly plucked guitars and delicate cymbal taps, establishing an airy, almost progressive atmosphere before the music expands into larger, heavier passages. The distant screams arrive naturally above the melodic guitar work, giving the song a mournful quality that fits the band's blackgaze approach. The riffs have a mesmerizing quality, moving at a steady pace while the deep drums add weight beneath the softer textures. What makes the track effective is the way Ebdromeer build tension without rushing to a predictable climax. The music gradually slows into delicate guitar picking and restrained percussion before launching into some wonderfully strange, almost alien-sounding guitar work. There's usually something in the arrangement to hold your attention, whether it's the riffs, drums or the way the instruments interact. The bass becomes more prominent later in the song, filling out the lower end nicely. Some guitar parts near the beginning and end sound slightly awkward or out of tune, but they don't seriously undermine the atmosphere.
“Ispoved” begins with softer guitar plucks before bringing in a thick bassline and distant vocals that sound full of pain. The spoken delivery gradually develops into screams, leading into heavier guitar work and rapid double-kick drumming. The song's overall riff structure feels more conventional than the opener, and it doesn't maintain the same hypnotic quality throughout. Still, the slower passages are effective, with the thick bass and lighter guitar playing creating a welcome sense of space. A guitar solo later in the track also offers a chance to appreciate the band's playing beyond the atmospheric layers and black-metal influence. As the song becomes heavier, the distant screams regain their impact, and the arrangement gradually finds its footing. It may not be the most distinctive track on the EP, but there are enough strong moments to keep it engaging.
“Nameshatter” brings a more urgent energy through washed-out guitar riffs, fast drumming and a darker, more anxious atmosphere. The guitars move between repeated melodic patterns and sharper passages, while the distant screams reinforce the track's black-metal character. The bass sounds noticeably fuller here, adding a buzzing low end that helps the faster sections feel more substantial. The double kicks have a satisfying weight, although some drum details initially sit a little low in the mix. As the song progresses, the snare becomes more pronounced and the band locks into a steady, driving groove. There is a brief stretch where the guitar and drum patterns begin to feel a little repetitive, but the return to the faster black-metal passages restores the momentum. It's a solid example of Ebdromeer leaning into the more aggressive side of their sound without completely losing the melodic atmosphere that makes the EP interesting.
“Wounds of Connection” is where everything comes together most convincingly. The song opens with slow, distant riffs and sharp snare hits, creating a dark atmosphere that has an almost gothic quality. The drums are particularly strong here, with tight rolls and controlled double kicks giving the song movement without overwhelming the guitars. The bass is low and plucky, providing a solid foundation beneath the more restrained passages. When the band suddenly shifts into faster black-metal riffing, the transition feels completely natural. The distant screams lock into the instrumental arrangement, and the guitars and drums sound more unified than they do elsewhere on the EP. There is a genuine sense of pain and anguish in the music, as though every member is putting everything they have into the performance. The band then pulls back into softer guitar lines and gradual buildups before unleashing another wave of blast beats and ripping riffs. Rather than feeling like a collection of disconnected sections, the song develops as one continuous emotional release. It's an excellent way to finish the EP.
Choir of Horses is a promising debut that demonstrates Ebdromeer's ability to balance black-metal aggression with atmospheric songwriting and melancholy melodies. The mix occasionally struggles in the quieter sections, and some guitar passages could be tighter, while “Ispoved” doesn't quite match the immediate appeal of the strongest material. However, the hypnotic riffs, expressive drumming and emotional weight of the closing track make the EP feel like more than a simple genre exercise. Ebdromeer are at their best when they let the music breathe and allow the atmosphere to develop naturally. There's plenty of room for refinement, but Choir of Horses is a compelling introduction to a band with a distinctive sound and genuine potential.
