Dropkick Murphy's / Haywire - New England Forever Review

Few collaborations feel as naturally aligned as Dropkick Murphys linking up with Haywire on New England Forever. Both bands emerge from different corners of the same regional identity—one steeped in anthemic Celtic punk, the other grounded in stripped-down hardcore—and this split leans heavily into the DNA they share: pride, grit, and a no-frills punk ethos that feels rooted in community.

The Dropkick Murphys side opens with “Citizen I.C.E.,” a fast, direct, politically charged track that channels old-school hardcore energy more than the usual folk-punk bounce. Haywire’s presence sharpens the edge, giving it a modern take on those blunt, call-out punk anthems of the ’80s. Following tracks like “Only The Strong” and “Solidarity” settle into a familiar groove: slower builds, driving drums, and shouted vocals emphasizing unity and resilience. The songs don’t reinvent the wheel, but the execution is tight, and the weight behind each performance carries it.

Where the record shines is in the crossover moments. Dropkick Murphys’ take on Haywire’s “Always By My Side” brings a subtle emotional pull—grittier vocals and a swing in delivery reinterpret the track without losing its essence. On Haywire’s half, the title track “New England Forever,” featuring Dropkick Murphys, functions as a mission statement: simple, direct, and communal. The gang-style vocals and collaborative feel emphasize shared identity, making the feature feel like a collective shout rather than a gimmick.

The back half of the split keeps the balance. “Hang Up The Telephone” leans melodic without losing bite, group vocals adding personality and a sense of community. “The Henchmen” returns to Haywire’s rawer roots with slower pacing and harsher vocals, reminding listeners of their aggressive core. The cover of “The Boys Are Back” closes things out on a lighter, catchier note, balancing familiarity with camaraderie.

What makes New England Forever succeed is its seamless collaboration. Dropkick Murphys can lean into hardcore energy without feeling out of place, and Haywire embraces anthemic flair without sacrificing grit. The structures are tight, the riffs straightforward, and the themes worn proudly—reinforcing a shared identity without overcomplication. It’s a split built on simplicity and sincerity, and in that, it’s wickedly effective.
