What do we call ourselves?
Chip Post Gang describe their music as caveman-noise rock, and The Things We Call Ourselves certainly has the raw, unfiltered energy that comes with that label. The South Korean trio pull from noise rock, no wave and post-hardcore, leaning into distorted guitars, loose arrangements and a seemingly instinctive approach to making noise. There are moments where that roughness gives the music a fun, unpredictable groove, but across this album, the line between deliberate chaos and music that feels unfinished gets pretty blurry. The biggest issue is the production. The guitars usually cut through, but the bass is frequently buried so deeply that it's difficult to hear or feel its presence, while the drums often dominate the mix without consistently locking into a convincing rhythm. The result can feel less like a controlled wall of noise and more like three instruments competing for space.
โThe entrance to the ground that you the SCUMBAG were even embracedโ offers some promising guitar work, with twangy riffs gradually building into a rough, distorted groove. The songwriting itself isn't terrible; there's an underlying rhythm that makes parts of the song enjoyable. Unfortunately, the uneven balance between the instruments makes it difficult to appreciate the full arrangement. The guitars sit prominently in the mix while the bass and drums fade into the background, and when the band brings everything back in after a quieter passage, the performance feels jumbled rather than explosively chaotic. โOatmealโ makes the problem even more noticeable. Its slow, deep bass should provide the foundation for the song, but it's practically swallowed by the recording. The drums become the most prominent instrument, yet their restless playing doesn't always create a clear direction. The riffs are there, but they often sound like they're floating around rather than forming a solid musical structure.
There's more energy in โVomit Waterfall Sprinkle Express Flower Intestine,โ which introduces faster drums and distorted riffs, but the recording sounds heavily compressed and the arrangement quickly becomes repetitive. You can hear the beginnings of a groove, although the rough tuning and clunky transitions make the song harder to follow than it needs to be. โHijackedโ is a more encouraging example of what the band can do. The guitars feel tighter, and the arrival of muffled, washed-out vocals gives the song a clearer sense of direction. The mix still struggles to balance its parts, but this is one of the more cohesive moments on the record. It suggests that Chip Post Gang can create something compelling within their messy approach when the arrangement gives the listener a little more to hold on to.
The instrumental tracks are a mixed bag. โ์์ด๊ธฐโ starts with deep bass and soft drum taps before the buzzing guitar arrives, but the bass soon gets pushed out of the mix again. The song isn't unpleasant, and its restrained sections leave room for the different sounds to develop, yet it never quite builds toward anything memorable. โINAZUMAโ has some decent drum fills and abrasive, high-strung guitar tones, while the muffled screams add another layer of texture. Still, the drumming often sounds uncertain, with cymbal work and transitions that feel clunky rather than deliberately disorienting. By contrast, โ์ฉ์ฐโ is one of the album's more convincing moments because it slows everything down. The measured drumming and ringing guitar strums have room to breathe, and the track feels more natural when it isn't trying to fill every second with activity. There's a simple atmosphere here that works better than some of the noisier, busier arrangements.
โ์น๊ตฌ์ ์์๋คโ spends much of its runtime gradually building through repeated riffs and delicate cymbal taps before introducing more drums and muffled screams toward the end. The eventual change gives the song a destination, but the journey there feels unnecessarily drawn out. โPenguin Manโ is more immediately engaging, with a loose, almost '70s rock quality to its guitar work and some of the more dynamic drumming on the album. Even here, though, the cymbals become so prominent when the band gets louder that they overwhelm the other instruments. There's a strange charm in the performance, but the mixing makes the band's sense of balance difficult to appreciate.
Then comes โLong Summer,โ a roughly 15-minute closer that puts the album's biggest weakness on full display. Slow cymbal buildups, repetitive strumming, loose timing and extended instrumental stretches create the impression of a rehearsal or improvisational session captured as it happened. That kind of spontaneity can be exciting, especially within noise rock, where conventional song structures aren't the point. The problem is that this performance doesn't develop enough to justify its length. Around the halfway point, the repeated patterns become exhausting, and even the quieter passages struggle to offer much variation. The stamina required to play this long is impressive, but endurance isn't the same as compelling composition.
There's something admirable about Chip Post Gang refusing to sand down their rough edges. Their DIY attitude and willingness to embrace awkwardness fit the caveman-noise rock identity, and โ์ฉ์ฐโ shows that they can create an effective atmosphere when they allow the music to breathe. However, The Things We Call Ourselves too often sounds underdeveloped rather than intentionally abrasive. A more balanced mix, a bass tone that actually registers, tighter performances and some editing would go a long way. The raw ideas are there, but the execution needs more focus to turn the chaos into something consistently rewarding.
