Another musician is on their journey to close out an old chapter in their lives. Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, is creating his Swan album, which is a great send-off to the persona he has crafted in the past 15+ years. Craft is the keyword with this album. He has carefully, meticulously, and shaped an album here with an overall cohesive narrative and playing with a variety of genres that makes this a beautiful album to experience. The various styles of music range from rap, r&b, techno, reggae, some experimental somber music, and even pop punk!!! The changing music styles are also elevated by his diverse singing styles. He goes from hard-as-nails rapping to soft and playful vocals. The energy in his vocal performance is incredible, and he can easily switch styles in a song or keep a consistent style in one song. Then you have a lot of backing vocals that add so much to the overall experience. All the features add a lot to the album, like on “In the Night," where the female vocals really make the song pop. And on “Can you feel me?” him talking to his young son feels like a king passing knowledge off to his young son. And you have the guest vocals that help shape his narration of being lost in life. The album is filled with nothing but great and amazing songs, except for one. The opening song is very disjointed and almost too weird to fit in with the rest of the songs. It just feels so out of place once you listen to the whole album. It's really cool to see how Donald Glover’s music always reflects who he is at that point in his life. So you always hear authentic and real music being made with a purpose.
